International Sunflower Guerrilla Gardening Day 2010

Today is the 4th 'International Sunflower Guerrilla Gardening Day'. On May 1st, guerrilla gardeners around the world will sow sunflowers all over the place.

The plan is to make the world a sunnier place so if you walk past a neglected piece of land that needs a bit of sunshine, get planting a seed. I love the idea and have planted a few seeds around the place this morning. I hope they survive and grow over the summer.

I love sunflowers. Part of the reason why I love France so much is the fields and fields of sunflowers. You can never been grumpy when you look at one.

Every year I attempt to create my own little sunflower field but the slugs eat them all up before they get big enough.

This year though, I have high hopes. It would seem that every child at J and Ls school is growing sunflowers. Last week, J brought home a newspaper plant-pot with some seeds in it which he proceeded to drown over the week. Surprisingly they seem to like the flooding and have just started sprouting.

Lou brought her pot home yesterday, ignoring my advice that really she didn't need to water them any more, she turned the tap on full, ripping the bottom out of the paper pot and spreading soil and seeds all over the kitchen, two minutes before tea was ready. Great. I wonder if her teacher wants that documented in the diary that she is going to be writing for her homework for the next month...

The seeds that Lou and I planted a few weeks ago are also doing well so maybe we will have sunflowers this year...I might just plant a few more to be on the safe side ;)

Only spotted this post today, do you think it's ok to plant some on the 2nd May?
Such a fab idea, think someone did it by some high rise flats near to me last year. Cheered the place up.

I planted my first lot a few weeks ago and have more on the go. I have 26 in place at the moment all round my fence in the back garden, they just make the cheeriest of welcomes!!
